Three Main Types of Laser Cutters

There are many ways to cut sheet metal, such as traditional shearing, water jet, and laser cutting. Among these, laser cutting has gained popularity as a fast, precise, and inexpensive way to cut sheet metal to create innumerable types of products and metal parts.

Laser cutting is exactly what the term implies — a process that uses a laser beam to cut metal or other materials. However, laser cutting itself has become a specialized process with different options to choose from. Currently, there are three main types and techniques of laser cutting.

1. Gas/Co2 Laser Cutter

The most common type of laser cutting utilizes a gas powered laser that directs a concentrated beam onto the surface of the material, cutting it precisely. They are versatile, relatively low power, inexpensive, and cut a very smooth edge. Co2 laser cutters can cut a wide variety of material such as glass, wood, and plastic, and have improved in recent years to the point that they can easily cut many types of sheet metal.

2. Crystal Laser Cutter

The second type of laser cutter is a crystal powered laser, using beams generated from neodymium-doped garnet or vanadium. They emit a powerful beam that can cut through thicker or harder materials than the other types of laser cutters. They are incredibly high powered, so these tend to be more expensive and wear out quickly.

3. Fiber Laser Cutter

These laser cutters work by using fiberglass diodes that channel and amplify the laser beam. They are high powered and energy efficient. This type of laser is gaining popularity because not only does it last longer than other types of laser cutters and is cheaper to repair, they are able to easily cut thick pieces of sheet metal and plate.

As you can see, you have several laser cutting options. Armed with the right knowledge, you can choose a metal fabrication shop that has the equipment that best fits your needs.
